Luskan, also known as the City of Sails, was a port city at the mouth of the River Mirar on the Sword Coast North . Luskan is a seafaring merchant city, home to fierce, proud, and warlike Northmen. This important northern port city is located at the mouth of the unnavigable Mirar River, a swift and icy, cold and rocky, waterway with the Mirar Road paralleling it to Mirabar. The perils of both the coastal High Road and the interior Long Road south from Mirabar relegate most metal trade to ships out of Luskan. Luskan’s structures are tightly packed, standing two and three stories above ground, and they are delved below ground as well.
Built on the ruins of the ancient and magical orcish city of Illusk,10 Luskan is a port town frequented by pirates, thieves and other disreputable folk interested in money. Although life within its walls was dangerous, Luskan was a very lucrative city. Pirates brought in their goods to be sold to the black market, northern traders frequented the place as a rest stop on their way to the Ten Towns during the warmer months, ready to buy exotic scrimshander ornaments, several taverns traded in ale and other spirits, the drugs and slave trades were rife (although obviously sublimated) and information brokers and prostitutes plyed their trade during the night-time.
Although this city of approximately 16,000 humans seeks merchant trade, visitors are few and feel unwelcome. This has much to do with Luskan being a known harbor for northern pirates, if not an outright sponsor of their activities. Inns serving travelers are rare. Visitors are directed to “Keep to the wall. . .The last lane holds the Cutlass.” The Arcane Brotherhood keeps a watch on visitors to the city. If one wants to walk freely without spies in tow, it’s advisable to enter by the sewers, in the hold of a Luskanite ship, or in magical disguise.
The Mirar River divides the city into two major parts. The northern section is a walled enclave, consisting almost entirely of warehouses. The southern half of the city is much older. This heavily fortified section of the city is surrounded by outlying walled caravan compounds. There are three bridges that connect the two halves of the city. They are the Harbor Cross, Dalath’s Span, and the Upstream Span. The Harbor Cross is broken into two sections, known as the Short and Long spans. Five major islands crowd the three closest to the the mouth of the Mirar River, and south bank are developed.
The city is officially ruled by the five High Captains: Taerl, Baram, Kurth, Suljack and Rethnor, all former pirate lords. However , today most believe that the true power in the city resided with the Arcane Brotherhood which resides in the Host Tower of the Arcane.
Host Tower of the Arcane is a spiral towering complex that houses some of the most powerful and influential arcane users. There are roughly around 130 members in the complex. The Arch Magus, leader of the Host Tower, is Arklem Greeth. It is also rumor that the Host Tower is the true power behind Luskan and that they are the puppet master controlling the five captains.
Places of Note:
Ruins of Illusk -Some of the ruins of the city that Luskan was built atop of still exists. Most folks stay away from the ruins as wandering undead, restless spirits of Illusk, are known to prey on the drunks and adventurers who get too close to the hidden passageways to the old city.
The Cutlass: – The Cutlass was one of the busiest taverns in the city, a haven for the crews of the pirate ships that docked in the harbour as well as the escorts whom they spend their share of the booty on.
Seven Sails Inn: – The Seven Sails Inn was an establishment where one could actually get some sleep. However, it was also a place closely watched by the Arcane Brotherhood.
